The department is a nascent addition to the institution. Unlike the other two dedicated cancer centres under the Government, MCC (PGIOSR) is located in the suburb of a small town. The nearest multispeciality hospital is 3.5-5km from the institution. Hence, the need to develop a department of respiratory medicine and critical care is pertinent.
The department has two faculties.
Dr Dhyana V, MD, DNB, IDCCM, Fellowship in Interventional pulmonology and thoracic oncology
Dr Arya Gopi, MD, DM, Pulmonary Medicine
Respiratory Medicine and Critical Care has evolved into a prominent and mandatory specialty soon after the COVID era. The patients who are suffering from cancer may have co-existing respiratory diseases like Br Asthma and COPD, and are prone to various respiratory complications like infections and pulmonary embolism. The Department was started at MCC with the aim of tackling these.
Sampling of the radiologically diagnosed disease is pertinent with demand for adequate tissue, as the new age is of molecular level diagnosis and treatment. Bronchoscopy, Thoracoscopy, and endobronchial ultrasound are done here for diagnostic purposes.
Interventional Pulmonology is a novel and flourishing subspeciality in which the minimally invasive procedures reduce the morbidity, as an alternative to major thoracic surgeries. Cancer patients are troubled by recurrent pleural effusion and emergencies like central airway obstruction. Facilities for Interventional Pulmonology were added as a solution to address these issues.
