Radiology/Radio-diagnosis is one of the fastest developing specialities of medicine. It has greatly influenced development of other speciality and is still doing so. It has become an important pillar in the diagnosis and management of cancer. Radiology is the medical specialty directing medical imaging technologies to diagnose and sometimes treat diseases. Originally it was the aspect of medical science dealing with the medical use of electromagnetic energy emitted by X-ray machines or other such radiation devices for the purpose of obtaining visual information as part of medical imaging. Radiology that involves use of x-ray is called roentgenology. Today, following extensive training, radiologists direct an array of imaging technologies (such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging) to diagnose or treat disease.
The influence of diagnostic and therapeutic radiology in the field of oncology has been immense with newer technologies finding its way in to the field. One or other modalities of imaging are used appropriately depending on the intent of the treatment. Accurate and early diagnosis is the only way at present to cure cancer and good clinico-radiological skill plays an important role in this. This speciality has slowly started diversifying in to many sub specialities and one of the important subspeciality which has influenced oncology is interventional radiology. It is not only important in the therapeutic aspect but also in palliation.
New imageology block of MCC was inaugurated in 2008. In the initial phase, department acquired 4 slice CT scan and a Doppler machine. Later, the department acquired state of the art machines like 1.5 T MRI (Signa HDxT) with facilities for routine and advanced imaging(Neuro, breast, cardiac and whole body imaging), digital mammogram with 3D tomosynthesis, Digital radiography, C-arm, Mini- PACS,Maxio robot for guidance in interventional procedures and a Radio frequency ablation machine. Recently department acquired high end ultrasound ( ToshibaAplio 500) with facility for TRUS biopsy, contrast ultrasound, fusion imaging and multiorgan elastography. We also acquired the Automated Breast Ultrasound (iABUS by Episonica) , which is the first in India in government set up.
Work is in full pace for further expansion of the department with installation of 128 slice CT, interventional radiology suite, enterprise PACS and PET-CT. These facilities are expected to be ready by next 6 months.

Facilities

The Department of Radiology/Radio-diagnosis of the hospital provides comprehensive services in the following imaging technologies:
1)    Conventional Radiography with Automatic processor
2)    Direct Radiography
3)    Mobile Radiography: At present have 2 conventional mobile units. Planning to get two fully motorised digital mobile units this year.
4)    C arm
5)    Mammogram: Has Hologic 3D breast Tomosynthesis. Has facility for stereotactic and vacuum assisted biopsy of breast lesion.
6)    Ultrasound : Has facilities for routine ultrasound imaging and advanced imaging like contrast enhanced ultrasound, fusion imaging, TRUS biopsy and multi-organ elastography.
7)    Automated Breast ultrasound: Once patient is made to lie down in the imaging table, machine automatically images each breast and creates axial, coronal and sagittal images , which can be reviewed by radiologist in his reporting console. It is one of its kind in Government set- up.
8)    Computed Tomography scan: Department at present has 4 slice CT and dose advanced imaging like multiphase studies and angiograms. Installation of 64 slice Revolution Evo CT is progressing.
9)    Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) : Has 1.5 T MRI ( GE Signa HDxT). Has facility for advanced neuro, cardiac, breast, endoluminal and whole body imaging facilities. Cardiac MRI has also being started recently for diagnosing chemo induced cardiac toxicity and for assessing iron overload in hematology patients.
10)    Radiofrequency ablation: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a medical procedure in which  tumor is ablated using the heat generated from medium frequency alternating current (in the range of 350–500 kHz). At present, the department does RFA for hepatocellular carcinoma and limited liver metastasis from colon, breast, melanoma and neuroendocrine tumours. Planning to start RFA for small renal cell carcinoma, lung cancer and limited lung metastasis. Department is also planning to acquire microwave this year.
Interventional radiology assistance platform: It has mechanical arm and special softwares which help the radiologist in placing biopsy needles and RFA needles indifficult to reach areas. It drastically reduces procedure related radiation and patient complications.

Scope : Provision of Comprehensive Services in Following Areas
1)    General X-Ray
2)    Special X-Rays such as barium swallow, barium meal, barium meal follow through and barium enema.
3)    3D Mammogram
4)    Stereotactic wire localisation
5)    Ultra Sonography
6)    Automated breast ultrasound
7)    Contrast ultrasound
8)    Ultrasound guided FNAC ,biopsy and aspiration
9)    Transrectal ultrasound
10)    Computed Tomography(CT)
11)    CT guided FNAC , biopsy and aspiration
12)    Magnetic Resonance Imaging
13)    Radiofrequency ablation
14)    Robotic biopsy and ablation
Courses Provided

Fellowship in Oncoimaging and Interventional radiology – It is oneyear Institutional fellowship programme which provides comprehensive training in diagnosis and interventions in oncology.

Number of seats – 2 per year.

Vision
Department is going to be expanded with an academic block, additional MRI, USG , mammogram and HIFU . Also planning to start novel fields like radiomics, DM in oncoimaging and interventional radiology and PhD programmes in near future.
