           Palliative care is a multidisciplinary approach to specialized medical care and nursing care for people with life-limiting illnesses. It focuses on providing people with relief from the symptoms, pain, physical stress, and mental stress of the terminal diagnosis. . The goal of such therapy is to improve quality of life for both the person and their family.

          Department of Cancer Palliative Medicine has been functioning in this Centre, since November 2002. The Centre is a recognized medical institution for possession and supply of Oral Morphine. The Palliative Care Services also provide counseling to patients and their family members. Cancer palliative medicine aims at improving the quality of life of cancer patients especially those for whom curative options have been exhausted. Cancer Palliative Medicine Division has an inpatient, outpatient and home care facility. Apart from this, specialized nurse managed two well functioning clinics-lymphedema clinic and stoma clinic also come under this department.

Homecare Service: Homecare facility for the needy patients was started on June 20, 2009. Home care is done thrice in a week catering to the need of patients staying within 35 kms from MCC.  There are so far 645 patients registered in homecare facility.  Patients are given medication free of cost. Procedures like ascetic tapping, wound dressing, catheterization, ryles tube introduction are done.  Apart from this psychological support to the patient and their families are also given.

The homecare service from MCC is Nurse- lead and doctor assisted. In order to make the service more effective consultation of the patient is done through e-palliative medicine wherein the patient and relatives can see and consult the doctor directly making the homecare visit more satisfying to them.

The e-palliative care activities of the centre won II prize (e-Citizen Service Delivery Category) in the Kerala state e-Governance Award 2016& 2017.

Palliative care link centers : As a result of referring the palliative patients to Link centres for palliative home care services and outpatient care, MCC has been able to reduce the load of palliative patients in the outpatient department and home care.  MCC aims at concentrating on training activities for doctors, nurses and volunteers so that effective palliative care services can be established throughout Malabar region.

Vision:

The Department aims at improving the quality of life of patients who are undergoing oncological treatment and help them with symptom management and pain control during treatment.

The department has a network connection with the various palliative clinics within the district and outside. Patients with advanced disease and those who are not suitable for anticancer treatments are referred to local palliative centres after the initial symptom control.             

We provide E palliative homecare service for the needy patients who stay within 35 km from the Institution and are difficult to be transported to the hospital. By this we promote, restore, and maintain a person's maximum level of comfort, function, and health, including care toward a dignified death.

Palliative care is about quality of life and includes rehabilitation. We seek to help patients achieve and maintain their maximum potential physically ,psychologically, socially and spiritually, however limited these have become as a result of disease progression adding life to their days, not days to their life.

  Integrating palliative care into comprehensive cancer care and providing continuity in care to the cancer patients.

  Training activities for doctors, nurses and volunteers so that effective palliative care services can be established throughout North Kerala.

  Achieving a Pain free hospital status.
